Launch of the Project and One Health Symposium at NIAB
The DBT One Health Consortium project was officially inaugurated on 13th October, 2021, virtually by Secretary, DBT. Coinciding with it, a Symposium was organized in two parts, one on 13th October and the other on 20th October. Both international and national speakers discussed various aspects of One Health in general as well as in relation to specific diseases. The international speakers included Dr. Baljit Singh, Vice-President, Research, University of Saskatchewan, Canada; Dr. Volker Gerdts, Director and CEO, Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization, University of Saskatchewan, Canada; Dr. Ashley Banyard, Head of Infuenza and Newcastle Disease Research, Deputy Director of the International Laboratory for Avian Influenza, Swine Influenza and Newcastle Disease, Animal and Plant Health Agency, UK; Dr. Hans-Martin Vordermeier, Team Leader, TB Immunology and Vaccinology, Department of Bacteriology, Animal and Plant Health Agency, UK; and Dr. Navneet Dhand, Associate Professor in Veterinary Biostatistics and Epidemiology; Director, Asia Pacific Consortium of Veterinary Epidemiology (APCOVE), Faculty of Science, University of Sidney, Australia. The national speakers included Dr. Deepanwita Chattopadhyay, Chairman & CEO, IKP Knowledge Park; Dr. Parag Nigam, Wildlife Institute of India; Dr. Manju Rahi, Deputy Director General (Senior Grade), Division of Epidemiology and Communicable Diseases, Indian Council of Medical Research, India; Dr. DhikarRaj, Professor and Head, Department of Animal Biotechnology, Madras Veterinary College, India; Dr. JPS Gill, GADVASU; Dr. Kuldeep Singh, AIIMS-Jodhpur; Dr. Rajni Kant Srivastava, ICMR-RMRC-Gorakhpur; Dr. SB Barbuddhe, National Research Centre on Meat; Dr. KP Suresh, National Institute of Veterinary Epidemiology and Disease Informatics; and Dr Sundhura Ganapathi, Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor, Government of India.
Symposium at ICAR-RCNEH
ICAR Research Complex, Umiam brought together national and international experts at the International Symposium on Zoonotic and Transboundary Diseases on 1-2 December, 2022. The two-day event, with participants from all over the country, Veterinary Department of Meghalaya and International Livestock Research Institute ILRI, Nairobi, touched upon crucial aspects for control of transboundary and zoonotic diseases, recommending a One Health approach. In the inaugural session, Padmashree Dr KK Sarma emphasized the need of One Health for managing diseases of wildlife that affect domestic livestock, while Col. Professor AM Paturkar, Vice Chancellor, MAFSU endorsed the multidisciplinary approach in handling complex biological challenges. The international narrative from ILRI also underpinned the same, giving examples from their efforts to contain African swine fever in the South Asian countries. Dr Ashok Kumar Assistant Director General, Animal Health, ICAR, New Delhi, pointed out that One Health is a focal theme of ICAR at the national level also. The organizing team was led by Dr V.K. Mishra, Director, ICAR NEH along with Dr Sandeep Ghatak (Organizing Secretary), Dr Arnab Sen (Convenor), Dr Samir Das (Co-Organizing Secretary) and Dr A.A.P. Milton (Co-Organizing Secretary).
Meeting at Assam Medical College and Hospital
ICMR Regional Centre, Dibrugarh, conducted a meeting on the implementation of One Health Consortium at the Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh.
Second PMC meeting was held at NIAB on 25.March.2022
APHA visit
The visit of the Director, Dr. G. Taru Sharma, with a team of scientists from NIAB to Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), Surrey, UK, on 18 & 19 December 2023. The discussions were held to develop collaborative projects with APHA and FAO Laboratories on One Health and Animal Diseases to enhance the capacity for effective surveillance and diagnosis of infectious diseases in India & UK and share the knowledge.
The Pirbright Institute visit
The visit of the Director, Dr. G. Taru Sharma, with a team of scientists from NIAB to The Pirbright Institute, Surrey, UK, on 20 & 21 December 2023. The potential collaboration between NIAB and The Pirbright Institute on developing next-generation vaccines for animal health has been discussed.
